According to the report, Facebook & other social media
platforms are watching users’ chats for criminal activity reasons &
notifying police if any doubtful behavior is detected.
Facebook starts the
screening process with scanning software that monitors all chats words or
phrases that signal something might be wrong, such as an exchange of personal
information or rude language.
According to Facebook, the
software now takes more attention to chats between users who don’t have a well-established connection on the site
& whose profile data information indicates something may be wrong. The
scanning program what use Facebook is also “Simple” — it’s made to able itself
to find out certain phrases in the previously obtained chat records from
criminals including sexual talking.
If the scanning software marks
a suspicious chat exchange, then it notifies to Facebook security employees,
who can then determine if police should be notified or not.
Finding most of the scanned
chats out, Facebook employees may help Facebook deflect criticism from privacy
advocates, no one doesn’t know whether the scanned chats are stored permanently
or deleted.
Joe Sullivan, Chief
Security Officer of Reuters
confirmed about the new details about Facebook’s
monitoring system. According to Reuters’ report, at least one alleged child
predator has been brought to trial directly. As a result, Facebook’s chat
scanning is easy to perform.
When asked for a comment,
Facebook only repeated Sullivan’s remarks what he told to Reuters: “We’ve never
wanted to set up an environment like this where our employees are looking at
private communications, it’s really important though we use technology &
that has a very low false-positive rate.”
According to a page of help section on its site, Facebook
works with a law enforcement where use appropriate scanning process which followed
by law to ensure the safety of the people who use Facebook.
“We may erase user’s chats
information if court orders to do that or other requests (including criminal
and civil matters) & user’s have a good faith on us, which is required by
law. It may include respecting requests from outside of the United States where
we have a good faith to users from jurisdiction, and also try to follow
accepted international standards.
“We may also share information
where we have a good faith belief, because of preventing fraud or other illegal
activity, to prevent forthcoming harm, or to protect ourselves as well as you
from people violating our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities with the
help of courts or other government entities.”
Moreover, Facebook cooperated
with police investigations previously. In Addition, in the month of April, Facebook complied with a police case from the Boston
Police Department by sending printouts of wall posts, photos and login/IP data
of a murder case.
