This world misses a star because one of the best writers in Bangladesh, Humayun Ahmed is no more. He died, Aged 64, while undergoing treatment for cancer at a New York, Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital last night. 
His wife Meher Afroz Shaon & younger brother Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, a reputed writer himself, was present when he breathed his last at around 12:15 pm USA time.

Humayun Ahmed was the eldest among three brothers and two sisters; he was also a renowned filmmaker & dramatist as well. He went to New York on September 14, last year after being diagnosed with colon cancer after a routine check-up in Singapore.

He received chemotherapy in 12 cycles at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York before he returned to Bangladesh on May 11, this year to spend time with friends and relatives for 21 days. He underwent two surgeries last month in Bangladesh. After the second surgery, he was infected with a virus which was unknown to the doctors, and spread through all over the body.

According to a former associate professor of the Chemistry department of Dhaka University, said that Humayun came into prominence after the publication of his first novel, “Nondito Noroke”, in 1974, when he was a teacher in Dhaka University.

The Republic of Bangladesh’s President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Party Khaleda Zia have expressed deep shock at the death of Humayun Ahmed.

Humayun Ahmed emerged as a powerful voice in Bangladesh's literary in the early 1970s, becoming clearly the most popular writer of the country.

Humayun Ahmed, nicknamed Kajol, was born in Kutubpur village of Netrakona on November 13, 1948. His father was Fayzur Rahman Ahmed, a police officer, and mother Ayesha Fayzur. His father was also a writer, was killed by the Pakistan army during the Liberation War in 1971.

Humayun Ahmed was the eldest among three brothers and two sisters. His younger brother Professor Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is also a writer in the field of Science fiction story. Ahsan Habib, another youngest brother of Humayun Ahmed, is a painter & editor of a cartoon magazine, “Unmad”.

Humayun Ahmed married Gultekin, granddaughter of Principal Ibrahim Khan, in 1973. This couple divorced in 2003 & had surprised everybody when he got married television actress Shaon.

Humayun passed his school life in Sylhet, Comilla, Chittagong, Dinajpur & Bogra, because of owing to his father's postings in these districts. He passed his School Certificate examination at Bogra Zilla School.

Humayun retired in the mid-1990s as a Dhaka University teacher, and devote himself to writing and making films and television dramas.

He directed a lot of film, but his first film, "Aguner Parashmoni", based on the 1971 Liberation War, won the “National Film Award” in eight categories, including Best Picture & Best Director. 

Humayun won the “Bangla Academy Award” in 1981 & the Ekushey Padak in 1994. His first award was Lekhok Shibir Prize in 1973.
