How to Avoid Oversharing on Social Media

Written By Unknown on Aug 28, 2012 | 12:12 PM

We live in digital society, people, and particularly younger generations are likely to share more than they should. According to “State of the Net” report, 52% of social network users post poor quality of information online. Only 20% of teens use privacy settings to ensure content is only viewable by friends, reported by McAfee.

For teen’s point of view, the problem with oversharing is not just the act itself, but the issues it can lead to down the line. Let’s take an example, if any girl posted some photos of passing time in Bar, which may mislead different perception by her friends or even her parents or something like that. Another example if anyone worked as a waitress and gets a $5 tip by customers who passed there for three hours. She complained about those customers on Facebook, which is totally against facebook policy. She thought that if my boss see this then it would be dangerous for me.

It is to be called; sharing online seems like a natural instinct. On Facebook , it's easy to see previous post and enjoy the memories, photos, and important dates you've posted for your pleasure. It would be valueless when sharing leads to problems like those faced by the girls mentioned above. Nobody wants to fall in that situation. If you’re a teen or a grownup, you need to know these real facts. We recommended you some ways to avoid oversharing to get protected yourself.

1. Always Share with Real Friends

When you want to share something make sure you know them and you also trust them. If you feel the need to share online you can share this, but don’t say anything what wasn’t really happened by you or some of your friends. Being online doesn’t make you anonymous.

In fact, your comments can be easily seen by your friends. There would be possibility to mislead your sharing which you don’t want or need. Here is an example like a teen that had 21,000 RSVPsfor a birthday party. But somehow the event was accidentally shared with the public. He also created fan pages to promote this event. Her house ended up rubbish.

2. Be careful about Location-based Apps

Always be careful to use location- based apps. If something wrong to use it, then you can turn off location services on apps on your smartphone. If you get confused why this is important, then you can see Girls AroundMe- the iPhone app. It shows the location of nearby girls with the data which collected from social media platforms. Another example is WeKnowWhatYou'reDoing... It gathers up information from Foursquare check-ins and Facebook public statuses.

Here, ICanStalkU.com you get the helpful guide on how to disable location services for almost every platform and operating system. It also helps you to turn off settings in your Facebook, Twitter, and photo services that may unnecessarily for you.

3. Try to share Selective topics On Social Networks

It is surprise to hear that most of the apps are made to track your activity. What exactly are you doing right now, where you are right now & many more. You can turn off instant sharing apps. Everyone doesn’t need to know which song you are listening to on Spotify right now, or what you are watching on YouTube. If you feel the need to share from apps, do it with a few people whom you trust well.

4. Update Your profile Settings if possible

If you forgot about last setting date, you can easily find it in account/privacy setting. If not possible then you set a reminder to check your profile settings on social networks. If you think it is too many times then changes at least once every three months.

BlissControl is a useful tool to select what you want to change on any of the social network and it takes you directly to make those changes (password, user information, username, third-party permissions, and privacy).

Sometimes the changes of social networks impact you. Checking them on daily which ensure you don’t end up sharing information you don’t mean to.

5. Consider a Service for Your Reputation

Facebook done well in every chat, photo, and status update saved. You can even download your data at a later date. Google keeps store your searches for up to seven years.

You always want people to see what they want to see, consider yourself as a brand. That’s why you need a little knowledge about reputation management. BrandYourself – a reputation management services helps you how you can create an effective fan page about you.

Other sites like Reputation.com runs a scan of your online reputation and then it alerts you if something wrong about you. Or, you can do it by the help of Google Alerts. NutshellMail sends a report through email by scanning of all social network activity for a certain keyword or term.

If we miss up any way from our point of view, you are most welcome to add some way which is feasible to all & let us know your valuable opinion with comments.
